Boskalis Sustainability Report 2020

COMMERCIAL OFFERINGS Boskalis aims to incorporate sustainable and low-carbon solutions into commercial offerings, supporting our clients to deliver sustainable projects. In our domestic home market of the Netherlands, Boskalis’ Netherlands (BKN) is taking major steps in proposing and successfully incorporating low-carbon solutions in our projects as described on this page. In 2020 80% of BKN tenders involved a sustainability component. The tenders varied from small-scale infrastructural tenders (EUR 500,000) to tenders

of EUR 200 - 300 million, of which over 90% were climate-related. On successful tenders, such as the Reinforcement Zwolle – Olst, we typically work with our client to develop a sustainability plan, not only on emissions but also on other relevant sustainability topics such as biodiversity and circularity. As a result of our experience in the Netherlands, we are building commercial sustainability expertise to apply in other markets and geographies. The carbon reduction measures we can apply depend on the project but can be summarized in three main categories:

DESIGN

LOW-CARBON FUELS

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Reducing the total energy needed to deliver the project by optimizing the design and reducing the use of materials.

Using lower-carbon energy sources such as biofuels, as well as machinery and facilities that run on (renewable) electricity.

Efficient use of energy, such as employing state-of-the-art machinery and behavioral training for our drivers, crews and design engineers.

Managing our impact on the environment SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2020 – BOSKALIS MAASMOND On behalf of the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Rijkswaterstaat, Boskalis started work in early 2020 on maintaining the depth of the western part of the Rotterdam port under a contract that is initially for three years. Subject to the client approving our proposals for the improvement of the overall sustainability of the project, the contract may be extended for another three years. The high fuel efficiency of the 4,500-m 3 trailing suction hopper dredgers Strandway, Causeway, Freeway and Shoalway, enables Boskalis to meet the environmental requirements and conditions of

the contract. This is one of the first large Dutch dredging works to include a significant sustainability component. The application of additional measures including the use of biofuels is under review and the installation of the efficient Selective Catalytic Reduction filter systems is planned. The project expects to dredge some 27 million m 3 in the next three years. In parallel to the execution of the dredging work a joined innovation room is set up with the client where innovations that can further reduce the carbon footprint and optimize the Life Cycle Cost can be tested and trialed.
